Interview with Trainee Giacomo Fioretta

Introducing Giacomo Fioretta, the latest member of the Forum Train Europe team! We are excited to welcome Giacomo, who brings fresh ideas and energy from his studies and traineeship at RFI. Learn about his journey and what motivated him to join FTE traineeship programme in this insightful interview.

Giacomo, could you tell us a bit about yourself?

Thanks for welcoming me in the FTE Office! I’m Giacomo, I come from Lecco, a small town on Lake Como. After completing a bachelor in Engineering Physics, I am about to complete my Master’s in Mobility Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. During my studies, I deepened my knowledge in my greatest passion, the transportation sector, and I carried out a thesis internship at RFI (main Italian IM). My research focused on analysing the challenges and opportunities of diverting freight traffic away from urban nodes, applied to the future freight bypass of Milan.

How did your passion for the railway sector develop, and what motivates you in this field?

Transportation always fascinated me, seeing it as something that influences our everyday life. Among all modes, rail has always inspired me the most, because of its ability to connect places and communities in a sustainable way. This is what motivates me to contribute to making rail an even stronger pillar of future mobility.

Why did you choose Forum Train Europe for your internship?

Forum Train Europe represents a unique opportunity to look at the railway sector with a 360° perspective. Each country has its own different railway system and actors, but the challenge today is to unify and integrate this fragmented landscape. I believe FTE offers the perfect environment to learn how this coordination can be achieved in practice.

What are your expectations for this internship?

I look forward to expanding my understanding of the European railway system and its complexities. I'm eager to learn about the various stakeholders involved and how they collaborate to enhance cross-border operations. I am confident that this experience will enable me to contribute to develop solutions that make rail transport even more efficient and harmonized. I believe this can be achieved within FTE and I can not wait to do so.

First weeks of your time have already passed, so you have already experienced the FTE community, how do you find it?

During my first weeks at FTE, I have really appreciated the office team. Everyone is passionate about their work and willing to share their knowledge. It’s also inspiring to see the wider FTE community, with participants from different countries collaborating in such a constructive atmosphere. My experience so far has been very positive, and I look forward to working with all of them.
